NEW YORK, Sept. 8 -- Grammy Award-winning violinist Joshua Bell will be the soloist in the original score by Oscar-nominated composer John Debney for the new DreamWorks Pictures film Dreamer: Inspired by a True Story, and Sony Classical will release the film's original soundtrack recording, which also features an end-title song by 16-year-old singing sensation Bethany Dillon. Written and directed by John Gatins and inspired by a true story, Dreamer stars Kurt Russell, Dakota Fanning and Kris Kristofferson, and it opens nationwide on Friday, October 21, 2005. Sony Classical will release the original soundtrack recording on Tuesday, October 18, 2005.

Bell's performance on the Dreamer soundtrack follows his acclaimed contribution earlier this year to the soundtrack of the English film Ladies in Lavender (nominated for a Classical Brit Award) and, earlier, his performances on the soundtracks of Iris and the Oscar-winning The Red Violin - all heard on Sony Classical soundtrack recordings.

Composer John Debney was an Oscar nominee in 2005 for his score for Mel Gibson's film The Passion of the Christ. He has also written scores most recently for Sin City, Christmas with the Kranks, The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, Raising Helen, The Whole Ten Yards, Elf, Bruce Almighty, The Hot Chick, The Tuxedo and the Spy Kids films. For his work in television, Debney is a three-time Emmy Award winner and a five-time nominee.

Singing sensation Bethany Dillon, who co-wrote (with Ed Cash) and performs the title song of Dreamer: Inspired by a True Story over the film's end credits, made her recording debut last year with a self-titled album that brought her GMA Music Award nominations for New Artist, Female Vocalist, Pop/Contemporary Album, and Pop/Contemporary Song of the Year.

Inspired by the dramatic fate of Mariah's Storm -- a promising filly that suffered a potentially career-ending injury in 1993 but recovered to become a champion the following year -- Dreamer tells the story of a father who, for the love his daughter, sacrifices everything to save the life of an injured racehorse and bring the promising filly back to her former glory. Kurt Russell plays the father Ben Crane, with Dakota Fanning as his young daughter Cale and Kris Kristofferson as his distant father.

Dreamer: Inspired by a True Story was directed by John Gatins, from his own screenplay, marking his directorial debut. Mike Tollin and Brian Robbins are the producers, with Ashok Amritraj, John Jashni, Bill Johnson, Stacy Cohen and Caitlin Scanlon executive producing. The cast also includes Oscar nominee Elisabeth Shue, David Morse, Freddy Rodriquez, Luis Guzman and Oded Fehr.

One of the world's most acclaimed classical violinists, Joshua Bell is an exclusive Sony Classical artist. The most recent addition to his remarkably varied catalogue is a new live recording of the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto with Michael Tilson Thomas conducting the Berlin Philharmonic. His previous recording Romance of the Violin (also available as a DualDisc) was named by Billboard Magazine as the 2004 Classical Recording of the Year, and Bell was named Classical Artist of the Year.

"Just Like Heaven," a DreamWorks film starring Reese Witherspoon, Mark Ruffalo and Jon Heder (in his first film role since "Napoleon Dynamite"), opens nationwide on Friday, September 16.

Just Like Heaven -- Music From The Motion Picture opens with international hitmaker Katie Melua (Britain's highest-selling female artist in 2004 and awarded Best International Newcomer at Germany's ECHO Awards in 2005) delivering an emotionally taut performance of the film's title song, originally an alternative rock hit for The Cure, whose 1987 version is also on the album.

The soundtrack album includes original catalog treasures from The Cars ("Good Times Roll" from 1978), Chakachas ("Jungle Fever" from 1971), and Screamin' Jay Hawkins ("I Put A Spell On You" from 1956) as well as five selections -- "Her Picture," "David Alone," "I'm Seeing Someone," "Machines Don't Know Everything," and "I Remember You" -- from the film's score by composer Rolfe Kent. Kent, who has scored more than 30 films including "Fight Club" and "Wedding Crashers," was nominated for a Golden Globe for his music for "Sideways" and earned BMI Film Music Awards for "Legally Blonde," "Legally Blonde 2," and "Freaky Friday."

The music for "Just Like Heaven" echoes and mirrors the film's narrative and emotional arcs, providing subtle counterpoint to the movie's action while illuminating the characters and their motivations.

TVT is proud to release the soundtrack for the forthcoming theatrical release Everything Is Illuminated. The soundtrack, released on September 20th features a score by composer Paul Cantelon (formerly of The Wild Colonials) and the music of the wildly inventive gypsy punk rock band Gogol Bordello, who make a cameo in the film and whose front man Eugene Hutz co-stars in the lead role opposite Elijah Wood. Hutz was originally approached to compose some music for the film and after an exhaustive casting search with no results, Liev Schreiber realized he had the perfect person to play the part right in front of him.

Everything Is Illuminated, to be released by Warner Independent Film on September 16th, is an adaptation of the novel by Jonathan Safran Foer and is the directorial debut of renowned actor Liev Schreiber. The story begins with an eccentric young man played by Elijah Wood traveling to the Ukraine to research his family roots, most importantly a mystery woman who helped his grandfather during World War II. His journey is aided by two locals played by Eugene Hutz in his first foray on the big screen and his ornery grandfather who goes nowhere without his insane dog. What starts out as a journey to piece together one family's story under the most absurd circumstances turns into a surprisingly meaningful journey with a powerful series of revelations.

High-Flying "Valiant Soundtrack" Soars into Stores August 16th on Walt Disney Records

The soundtrack to Valiant Walt Disney Pictures' newest computer-animated comedy-adventure, sets the tone for the heroic World War II tale by perfectly capturing the musical feel of the '30s and '40s with original music composed by four-time Academy Award(R) and two-time Grammy(R) nominee George Fenton (Gandhi, Dangerous Liaisons).

Valiant, the newest offering from the producer of Shrek and Shrek 2, is a tale of a brave-but-undersized pigeon (voiced by Ewan McGregor) who dreams of joining the elite Royal Homing Pigeon Service and serving crown and country during World War II. Composer George Fenton captures the spirit of the movie with a sweeping, diverse score performed by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra that shows life for the Royal Homing Pigeons is anything but a day in the park. Fenton hearkens back to the era of classic World War II films with the proud, martial air of "Valiant" and "March of the R.H.P.S." The playful swing music of "Arrival at Camp" lightens the mood before lindy hopping listeners into the dramatic and ominous "Von Talon and the Bastion." (Hollywood, CA) - On July 12th, 2005, Milan Records released Alex Wurman's emotional soundtrack for Warner Independent's National Geographic documentary March of the Penguins. Without any dialogue, images and music blend to tell the noble and emotional story of one of Earth's most resilient and determined species. "Alex's soundtrack conveys the character of the penguins, the emotional heat and the epic adventure of their arctic journey," says Adam Leipzig, President of National Geographic Feature Films. New BATTLESHIP POTEMKIN soundtrack from the PET SHOP BOYS

The Pet Shop Boys and the Dresdner Sinfoniker (conducted by Jonathan Stockhammer) will release their version of the Battleship Potemkin soundtrack this September. Londoners will recall the performance by the group and the Sinfoniker in September 2004 in front of thousands of people in Trafalgar Square as the film was projected onto a giant screen.

Speaking to the BBC before the performance last year, singer Neil Tennant said "We liked the idea that we were going to take something made in the 1920s and put contemporary electronic music to it. The director (Sergei Eisenstein) said that he wanted there to be a new soundtrack to the film every ten years to keep it fresh."

According to Tennant, the new soundtrack "changes the way you see the movie" about a sailor's revolt in 1904. Tentative release date for the new soundtrack is September 5 through EMI.

Marco Beltrami is onboard to score the next Underworld film, dubbed Underworld Evolution. Like the first, the sequel stars Kate Beckinsale. Beltrami is one of the experts at modern horror film scoring, having made a name for himself on Wes Craven's Scream flicks. Ten years after starting his career in Los Angeles, Beltrami's a top composer in Hollywood now, having scored I, Robot, Hellboy, Terminator 3 The Rise of the Machines, Blade II and others.

Beckinsale is a beautiful vampire warrior in the Underworld, entrenched in a war between the vampire and werewolf races. The music for the first Underworld film from 2003 was written by Paul Haslinger.

Varese Sarabande has announced soundtrack details of the forthcoming The Skeleton Key soundtrack, due for release on August 2, 2005.

Set in the dark backwoods outside of New Orleans, the movie's soundtrack features jazz and blues songs from the river delta, including cuts by Robert Johnson, Mississippi Fred McDowell, Blind Willie Johnson and more. The soundtrack also features the 1960s New Orleans-based Dixie Cups and their original recording of "Iko Iko" (made famous in the 80s when it was re-recorded by the Belle Stars for Rain Man).

On June 21, La-La Land Records will release the Battlestar Galactica: Season One soundtrack, featuring more than 78 minutes of the best musical moments from season one of this highly acclaimed new series.

Battlestar Galactica: Season One contains both the US and UK main title themes as well as music composed by Bear McCreary for the series, which TV Guide declared “a breakaway hit…poised to replace Star Trek as TV’s definitive sci-fi series.” The CD packaging features exclusive liner notes from McCreary and the show’s executive producer David Eick.

Composer Bear McCreary is a classically trained composer with a degree in Composition and Recording Arts from the prestigious USC Thornton School of Music. He has composed score for over thirty independent films, including director Jon Chu’s musical short When the Kids Are Away and the Discovery Channel miniseries The 5 Coolest Things. McCreary was among a handful of select composers to have studied independently with the late film music legend Elmer Bernstein (The Magnificent Seven).

While some of the names may be the same, this is not your father’s Battlestar Galactica! Captain “Husker” Adama (Edward James Olmos) and President Larua Roslin (Mary McDonnell) lead the Battlestar Galactica crew. They are trying to locate the fabled 13th Colony of humans, planet Earth, to join with their brethren against the Cylons which have taken over their homeland. The Cylons, which can look like humans and even be programmed to think they are, aren’t the only threat, as morale and the quantity of supplies are always an issue. In an interesting casting choice, Richard Hatch (who played Captain Apollo in the original series), is cast as villain Tom Zarek, a political prisoner who has spent the past 20 years in jail for his participation in the bombing of a government building.

"With its unique combination of intricate character arcs, dark ambience and gritty battle sequences, Battlestar Galactica afforded me countless opportunities for musical exploration,” said McCreary. “Fans will immediately recognize all their favorite musical moments from the first season, including the lush orchestral works featured in the dynamic two-part season finale. KNIGHT RIDER television soundtrack due in July

New 80s TV soundtrack for "Kinght Rider" coming from Film Score Magazine:

Knight Rider (1982-1986) was a hit NBC-TV series starring David Hasselhoff as a lone crusader armed with "Kitt," the world's most sophisticated car. This premiere CD features original soundtrack music from the first half of the show's first season, produced in conjunction with the composer, Stu Phillips, and his Wrightview Productions.

The theme to Knight Rider (co-composed by Phillips and Glen A. Larson) is one of the most memorable of the period, with a "driving" groove for electronics and rhythm section that has been sampled by several hip-hop artists. The theme makes its stereo debut here and has never sounded better.

In addition to the main and end titles, this CD features lengthly suites from Stu Phillips's scores for the series' two-hour pilot, "Knight of the Phoenix," and four episodes: "Not a Drop to Drink," "Trust Doesn't Rust" (guest starring the evil prototype of Kitt, "Karr"), "Forget Me Not" and "Inside Out." The entire album (except for one track) is in stereo.

STEALTH soundtrack features Incubus, David Bowie, BT

Stealth director Rob Cohen personally selected SoCal rockers Incubus to write three songs specifically for the film, something they had never done before. "Make a Move" will be released to radio in July, and is also heard on the film's trailer. Joining up with legendary Chrissie Hynde (the Pretenders), the group penned "Neither of Us Can See," which will be played over the closing credit scroll.

David Bowie has been laying low this year, except for work on "(She Can) Do That," a song constructed by remixer/producer/composer BT for Stealth. On his website, Bowie says "BT wanted me to write the lyrics and top line melody for a backing track that he had written and produced... I wrote my part in New York and recorded it... I then sent the parts back to BT in L.A., and he did the mix there."

Stealth stars Jamie Foxx, Jessica Biel and Josh Lucas, arrives July 29 in U.S. theaters. The Stealth soundtrack will be in stores 7/12 on Epic Records.

(Warner Sunset Records) - The highly anticipated soundtrack from Tim Burton's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, starring Johnny Depp, which opens nationwide on July 15th featuring original music and songs by award winning composer and musician Danny Elfman (Spider-man, Good Will Hunting) will be released by Warner Sunset Records on July 12th.

For Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (the composer's 11th collaboration with director Tim Burton), Elfman has composed the score as well as the original song "Wonka's Welcome Song," (with lyrics written by Elfman and screenwriter John August, and music by Elfman). Elfman has also written the music for 4 other tracks with lyrics based on the lyric chants in the "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" book by Roald Dahl. Elfman wanted to stay true to Dahl's words in the book, which had a wonderful rhythm to them.

For the first time since The Night Before Christmas, Elfman sings lyrics for the 4 Oompa-Loompa songs about four of the children who win tickets to tour Willy Wonka's incredible chocolate factory - "Augustus Gloop," "Violet Beauregarde," "Mike Teavee," and "Veruca Salt," as well as the new original song "Wonka's Welcome Song." Elfman's orchestral score and sweet new pop songs perfectly set the mood for this visually stylistic film. "This is the 11th film I've worked on with my friend and collaborator Danny Elfman," said Burton. "Each time has been different and Danny is always an important character in the telling of the film. He has created yet another fantastic score that successfully reflects the movie."

Burton continued, "What was unique about Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was the creation of the Oompa-Loompa songs. It was great fun to see Danny work within a number of different musical genres." "The great part of working with Tim on the music was that he kept throwing me off center by suggesting different styles of music that I wasn't expecting. His ideas have so often led me to places that I wouldn't have thought of, but remain my favorites. In particular on the songs for 'Charlie' Tim and I worked very closely together and the challenge was to give each song for each child their own distinct feel. 'Augustus Gloop' was inspired by big brassy Bollywood production pieces; 'Violet Beauregarde,' the gum-chewer, threw back to a retro 70's funk feel; 'Mike Teavee,' needed something frenetic and hyperactive like he is, the short attention span video game rock kid; and 'Veruca Salt' who goes down the garbage chute has lyrics about fish heads," said Elfman.

The Grammy-winning, Oscar-nominated Elfman has been working in the motion-picture arena since 1985, when director Tim Burton - fascinated by Elfman's playfully macabre music for the cult L.A. rock band Oingo Boingo - called him to write the music for Pee-Wee's Big Adventure. The Elfman-Burton collaboration continued with the clever and quirky music for Beetlejuice (1988) and reached a high point with the massive, gothic score for the original film Batman (1989), which won a Grammy for the composer - and legions of fans, who felt that his Wagnerian approach gave the comics' Dark Knight a new and entirely appropriate sound.

Since then, Elfman has scored nearly all of Burton's cinematic excursions, including the touching Edward Scissorhands (1990), with its delicately lyrical choral passages; the funhouse-from-hell music for the mad Penguin and Catwoman in Batman Returns (1992); the songs and score for the imaginative Halloween fable The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993); the '50s-style sci-fi score for Mars Attacks! (1996); the intense and powerfully orchestrated Sleepy Hollow (1999); and the percussion-driven Planet of the Apes (2001). Five of Elfman's eight Grammy nominations are for Burton films.

EMI Music, the world’s largest independent music company, recently announced plans to partner with Walt Disney Studios and Walden Media to produce two soundtracks of music inspired by what is one of 2005’s most anticipated films, a live action adaptation of C.S. Lewis’ best-selling classic, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe.

EMI Music’s Nashville-based EMI CMG will release both “inspired by” soundtracks and has announced an all-star line up for the first in the series of releases: an Inspirational soundtrack CD, Music Inspired By: The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe, featuring recordings from artists that combined have sold in excess of 23 million albums.

Five-time Grammy Award Winner Steven Curtis Chapman leads the pack with the project’s debut single and video, “Remembering You,” which will release to Christian radio formats nationwide on August 5th. Jars of Clay ("Waiting for the World to Fall"), Jeremy Camp ("Open Your Eyes"), TobyMac, Nichole Nordeman ("I Will Believe"), Rebecca St. James ("Lion"), Delirious ("Stronger"), Kutless, Bethany Dillon ("Hero"), Chris Tomlin ("You're The One") and David Crowder Band round-out the line up thus far. Musical Score Features 70-Piece Hollywood Union Orchestra and Members of World-Famous Operatic Choir

EDISON NJ – Building on the excitement surrounding the May launch of one of their most-anticipated products, Majesco (NASDAQ: MJES), a provider of diversified products and content for digital entertainment platforms, today announced an ensemble of top Hollywood and award-winning musical talent behind the video game soundtrack for Advent Rising.

Recorded at Paramount Pictures, Hollywood, CA, the Advent Rising soundtrack is a completely original musical score that incorporates live orchestral and vocal elements to create a variety of musical themes utilized throughout the game. The soundtrack is also planned for retail release to coincide with the game.

"Our approach with Advent Rising was to create a game play experience similar to that of an epic film," said Ken Gold, vice president of Marketing for Majesco. "Creating a powerful soundtrack was a key component to evoking a higher level of player emotion and allowing the player to feel completely immersed in the Advent universe while playing the game."

Majesco contracted a 70-piece Hollywood union orchestra, which was led by Emmy Award-winning conductor Mark Watters. The score was then mixed and recorded by Armin Steiner, the Grammy Award-winning mixing engineer best known for his work on such blockbusters movies as Finding Nemo, Seabiscuit, and The Matrix trilogy.

Composition and sound design was created by award-winning composer and video game sound designer Tommy Tallarico, who enlisted the talents of a world famous operatic choir and their complimenting children’s choir united to perform the music’s extraordinary chorus. Emerging RCA recording artist Charlotte Martin co-wrote and performed lead vocals and piano for the song “Greater Lights,” which is featured on the soundtrack.

SCORE WILL FEATURE ZZ TOP GUITARIST BILLY GIBBONS

(HOLLYWOOD, CA) Composer Nathan Barr scores Warner Bros.' The Dukes of Hazzard, the feature film based on the popular 1980s television show of the same name. To create the sounds of Hazzard County, Barr will employ ZZ Top's legendary Texan guitarist Billy Gibbons for an authentic classic rock feel. The film, a Southern-fried action comedy starring Johnny Knoxville, Seann William Scott and Jessica Simpson as the cousins Duke, Willie Nelson as Uncle Jesse and Burt Reynolds as Boss Hogg, will be released August 5. This is the second film Barr has scored for director Jay Chandrasekhar, the two previously collaborated on 2004's dark comedy Club Dread.

Barr's score for The Dukes of Hazzard inflects the free-wheeling good times that come with car chases, short-shorts wearing Southern belles and seeing right prevail over wrong in Hazzard County. Barr, who describes the music as "Allman Brothers meets AC/DC meets ZZ Top," will feature ZZ Top's Billy Gibbons on the guitar-heavy classic rock and roll score, and use Beck's keyboardist and rhythm section. As one would expect, a healthy dose of Hazzard County fiddle will round out the score.

A gifted musician who began studying at age four, Barr has studied and performed all over the world. After studying an eclectic array of strings and percussion instruments in Japan and experiencing operas and orchestras in Bali and China, Barr toured Europe with the Julliard Cello Ensemble, and after graduating college, joined the industrial band V.A.S.T., playing guitar and electric cello. Looking to explore a career in film music, he moved to Los Angeles in 1996, where he met Academy-Award winning composer Hans Zimmer, who mentored him for several months before he landed his first feature. Barr has since scored dozens of films including From Dusk Til Dawn 3 and Cabin Fever, as well as several TV series. He resides outside Los Angeles with his wife, recording artist Lisbeth Scott, well-known as the soloist for films including The Passion of the Christ, Shrek and Shrek 2.

In his native France, Alexandre Desplat began composing for film in the mid 1990s. BATMAN BEGINS soundtrack to be released 6/14

On June 15th, Warner Bros. Pictures' Batman Begins, from director Christopher Nolan, the summer's most anticipated theatrical release, opens nationwide featuring a score that will immediately make music history -- a unique collaboration between two of the screen's most honored and respected composers, Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard, working together for the first time. Warner Sunset Records will release the Batman Begins soundtrack on June 14th. The soundtrack contains 12 tracks composed by Zimmer and Howard and is 60 minutes in length.

"Watching this unique collaboration between two great talents has been constantly fascinating and exciting. Their contribution to Batman Begins has been immeasurable," said Nolan.

"Collaborating on this project has been a lot of fun. Since Batman Begins is a character driven story, we wanted to give Batman credibility through the music. We've created a score that tried to stay true to the duality of the character, capturing the motion, energy, darkness and rage of Batman," said Zimmer and Howard.

Batman Begins explores the origins of the Batman legend and the Dark Knight's emergence as a force for good in Gotham. In the wake of his parents' murder, disillusioned industrial heir Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) travels the world seeking the means to fight injustice and turn fear against those who prey on the fearful. He returns to Gotham and unveils his alter-ego: Batman, a masked crusader who uses his strength, intellect and an array of high tech deceptions to fight the sinister forces that threaten the city.

Zimmer is one of the most respected and talented composers in the business with over 100 film scores to his credit highlighted by his Oscar winning score for The Lion King as well as scores for Oscar winning films including Gladiator, Rainman, and Driving Miss Daisy. Zimmer's credits also include The Last Samurai, Black Hawk Down, Thelma and Louise, and the new DreamWorks release Madagascar.

James Newton Howard, a six time Oscar nominee, is best known for his spine tingling scores for M. Night Shyamalan's The Village, for which he received an Oscar nomination, as well as The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable and Signs. Howard's list of credits includes over 90 films including The Fugitive, The Prince of Tides and most recently The Interpreter.

The soundtrack of Brothers also features the beautiful song "When I'm Coming Home" writen by Jesper Winge Leisner. Yes! The Yes soundtrack due June 21, 2005

No, it's not what you're thinking. Looking out over the horizon shows no movie coming about that phenomenal band from the UK or its many tribute bands around the world. Quite differently, Yes is a new "opposites attract" movie from Sally Potter that travels around the world as a multi-cultural affair ignites between an Irish American scientist and a Lebanese surgeon (exiled in London where he works as a cook). Soundtracks have always been very strong elements in Potter's films (Orlando, The Tango Lesson, The Man Who Cried), and this newest follows the mold. Composers and artists compiled for the Yes soundtrack include Philip Glass, Uakti, Chopin, Satie, B.B. King and Eric Clapton, Kronos Quartet and more. The diverse music from East and West "echo the key themes of the film... there is in all of them a feeling of flow and a kind of yearning," according to Potter. CD hits shelves on June 21, the movie hits the limited circuit beginning June 24.

60s TV: Jericho/The Ghostbreaker soundtracks now available

Film Score Magazine is at it again, this time unearthing some rare and obscure music for television by two of the most prominent names in the movie music business: John Williams and Jerry Goldsmith. Read on!

"From the Warner Bros. archives of vintage M-G-M television material and Norman Felton's Arena Productions comes this doubleheader of rare projects: Jericho (1966), a short-lived CBS action-adventure series scored by much of the staff from The Man From U.N.C.L.E.; and The Ghostbreaker (1965), a busted pilot with a score by John Williams."

"Jericho was a WWII adventure series following three Allied specialists on secret missions throughout Europe. The theme and second episode were scored by Jerry Goldsmith, replacing a theme by Lalo Schifrin who had scored the pilot. Goldsmith's and Schifrin's efforts are presented along with other scores by Morton Stevens, Gerald Fried and Richard Shores."

"The Ghostbreaker was a one-hour pilot starring Kerwin Mathews as a parapsychologist investigator. John (then "Johnny") Williams wrote a dynamite theme that compares favorably to his TV work for Irwin Allen, and a creepy score including harpsichord and solo soprano. The score is a forgotten jewel by one of the world's most famous composers."

Word to the collector: You are no completist unless you have these!

Mark Isham update

In his latest newsletter, composer/trumpeter Mark Isham reveals pigeonholing is not part of his game... well, sort of. From scoring a hockey sports pic (Miracle) to zebra-turned-race horse (Racing Stripes) to dark LA drama (Crash, limited release this month in theaters) to soccer dads and silliness (Kicking and Screaming, release this month), we're lead to believe Isham loves variety ("it's the spice of life!"), but on closer examination, Isham's batting average for scoring sports flicks (comedies or no) is going up!

Two soundtracks will be released for Crash on the Superb label in early June, one featuring Mark's score, the other featuring our favorite soundtrack band... "From and Inspired By." No word on a soundtrack release of Kicking and Screaming.

Mark's score for 2003's The Cooler is being reissued on the Commotion label and will include a few more score cues by the composer. Also due in June.

All of us were surprised by the box office haul the film pulled in back in February, claiming #1 with $22M. The uplifting film has since grossed more than $50M, setting the stage for a very successful soundtrack. Adding to the popularity of the film, artists like India.Arie, Monica, Natalie Cole and other it-folk from R&B, pop and gospel all contribute compelling songs that create a depth most vocal soundtracks never reach. Hot on the heels of Film Score Magazine's Where Eagles Dare / Operation Crossbow 2CD set of classic Ron Goodwin soundtracks, two more WWII soundtracks by Goodwin on another double-CD release are now available from the label: 633 Squadron / Submarine X-1. Hailed by collectors as one of Goodwin's finest war film scores, the 633 Squadron music features a unique "chattering brass" theme to capture the emotional high of piloting missions in WWII airspace. This is not the first time 633 has been released on CD, although FSM's version represents remastered sound and a few extra tracks than previous LP or CD releases. For you guys who love the soundtracks for classic WWII films, this is another gem not to be overlooked. As always, the CD booklet contains in-depth histories and track-by-track analyses for both films.

Fantastic Four soundtrack glimpse

Wind-Up records has announced the official Fantastic Four soundtrack website at fantasticfoursoundtrack.com. The album is in production for a summer release (final date tbc), tied to the July 8th release of the movie from Fox.

Music previews will be released regularly on the website between now and the album's release, including both new artists and some very well-known artists from Wind-up and other labels. Starting off is a demo version of the track "Die For You" by the talented performer Megan McCauley. Megan debuted earlier this year with the song "Wonder" on the Elektra soundtrack CD, and is currently putting together her solo debut album.

Maverick Records will release the soundtrack to this year's remake of the 1953 horrorfest House of Wax on May 3. A first look at the tracklisting unveils a mixmash of electronica (The Prodigy), death rock (Marilyn Manson) and melodic vibe (Deftones). Stuffed with stars like Elisha Cuthbert and Paris Hilton, the movie's about a weekend getaway horrifically gone awry. Teenaged boys will be out in force to see Cuthbert again, her first appearance since driving them mad in The Girl Next Door.

The two Oscar dames Maggie Smith and Judi Dench pair up on screen to discover a young broken violinist (violinist, not violin) washed ashore after a violent storm. Such is the setting for the newest soundtrack recording featuring acclaimed performer Joshua Bell (of The Red Violin fame). 2005 could be known as "The Year of the Bell" in classical circles: Josh is flying high right now, named Classical Artist of 2004 by Billboard, who also named his "Romance of the Violin" the Number 1 Classical Album of 2004 (a track of which is on the Ladies in Lavender soundtrack). His success takes him on a big US tour this year, from UCLA's Royce Hall to the Santa Fe Opera and on to Carnegie Hall in New York, but not before he appears with Dames Smith and Dench at the Tribeca Film Festival on April 23.

Ladies in Lavender composer Nigel Hess says Bell "takes the music I've written to a whole new level. Hearing him play was like stepping into a really expensive Rolls Royce." Alrighty then! You moviegoers who love movie music primarily exuded on violin will be riding in style soon. The soundtrack will be in stores April 26 on Sony Classical.

Hoosiers soundtrack double pumps!

March Madness... Swoosh, Swish and the Sweet 16. That's where we are right now in the NCAA basketball tourney, only 4 to remain this time next week. Yeah, all of the number one seeds are still alive, but none of 'em have "The Theme from Hoosiers" to warm up to as does every Indiana state basketball team, from the pipsqueeks to the pros. Thanks to the creative genius of composer Jerry Goldsmith and the passionate filmmaking of David Anspaugh, Hoosiers will always exist, even if not one Indiana b-ball team has it in 'em to get mad in March these days. While very much an 80s piece of music (Casio keyboards ruled), the spririt of this score keeps on winning year after year. Despite its greatness this thing still is not available on CD in the USA (dammit, where's my LP cleaning fluid?), though we're not out of luck... there is a CD manufactured in Europe (Europe?), secretly hiding out under the name "Best Shot." So now you know. Don't ask why the Euros might care more about a basketball soundtrack than any American music company... just take this assist and dunk it, baby!

More: Love & Basketball is a great movie, filled with songs memorable and fitting, but no mentionable score or inspiring instrumental music. Of course, for the Looney Toon in you, a couple of soundtracks exist for Space Jam with MJ (not Jackson, if that's what yer thinking, although sex-tape man R Kelly's song deserved an Oscar that year, more than any other).

Basketball movie soundtracks now living in faded oblivion: Coach Carter (already toast), Hoop Dreams, The 6th Man (total air ball!), and Basketball Diaries.

If you can write hallowed music for Jesus the man God and a low brooding score for a city completely devoid of morals, you can do just about anything I suppose), he busted his chops on a great big huge orchestral score for Cutthroat Island. Just about everything failed in this film except for Debney's music, which really is a resurrection (hey, Debney's good at this) of E.W. Korngold's classic swashbuckling scores from the 1930s. Even the first original soundtrack CD released failed to find a distributor before the label went bellyup, so the only version that's been available is an import from the UK. But coming in April 2005 is a new 2 CD set with all kinds of music left off the first releases, included Debney's synth mock up demo that apparently landed him the gig.

First, what we know. From the inside track, top selling CDs this year include those with music from Phantom of the Opera and Ray (there are multiple soundtrack versions from each movie, you know... the "more music from" and "bonus this and that" CDs that all aim to make us obsessive over something motion picture-like that has music in the foreground!).

Keeping strong is the Garden State soundtrack, why? 1,000,000 reasons, including yours. Interest in the Finding Neverland and Motorcycle Diaries soundtracks skyrocketed for a week or two in March thanks to the Oscars bestowed upon their musical merits in February.

So what's next? In the world of instrumental scores, if John Williams is due on the scene, then that's what's next. The name of the most Oscar-nominated man in history will be on screen twice in less than as many months to kick off the summer season: Star Wars Episode III The Revenge of the Sith and War of the Worlds. Both promise bigness.
