Written and directed by John Gatins and inspired by a true story, Dreamer stars Kurt Russell, Dakota Fanning and Kris Kristofferson, and it opens nationwide on Friday, October 21, 2005. Sony Classical will release the original soundtrack recording on Tuesday, October 18, 2005.

Bell's performance on the Dreamer soundtrack follows his acclaimed contribution earlier this year to the soundtrack of the English film Ladies in Lavender (nominated for a Classical Brit Award) and, earlier, his performances on the soundtracks of Iris and the Oscar-winning The Red Violin - all heard on Sony Classical soundtrack recordings.

Composer John Debney was an Oscar nominee in 2005 for his score for Mel Gibson's film The Passion of the Christ. He has also written scores most recently for Sin City, Christmas with the Kranks, The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, Raising Helen, The Whole Ten Yards, Elf, Bruce Almighty, The Hot Chick, The Tuxedo and the Spy Kids films. For his work in television, Debney is a three-time Emmy Award winner and a five-time nominee.

Singing sensation Bethany Dillon, who co-wrote (with Ed Cash) and performs the title song of Dreamer: Inspired by a True Story over the film's end credits, made her recording debut last year with a self-titled album that brought her GMA Music Award nominations for New Artist, Female Vocalist, Pop/Contemporary Album, and Pop/Contemporary Song of the Year.

Inspired by the dramatic fate of Mariah's Storm -- a promising filly that suffered a potentially career-ending injury in 1993 but recovered to become a champion the following year -- Dreamer tells the story of a father who, for the love his daughter, sacrifices everything to save the life of an injured racehorse and bring the promising filly back to her former glory. Kurt Russell plays the father Ben Crane, with Dakota Fanning as his young daughter Cale and Kris Kristofferson as his distant father.

Dreamer: Inspired by a True Story was directed by John Gatins, from his own screenplay, marking his directorial debut. Mike Tollin and Brian Robbins are the producers, with Ashok Amritraj, John Jashni, Bill Johnson, Stacy Cohen and Caitlin Scanlon executive producing. The cast also includes Oscar nominee Elisabeth Shue, David Morse, Freddy Rodriquez, Luis Guzman and Oded Fehr.

One of the world's most acclaimed classical violinists, Joshua Bell is an exclusive Sony Classical artist. The most recent addition to his remarkably varied catalogue is a new live recording of the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto with Michael Tilson Thomas conducting the Berlin Philharmonic. His previous recording Romance of the Violin (also available as a DualDisc) was named by Billboard Magazine as the 2004 Classical Recording of the Year, and Bell was named Classical Artist of the Year.

SOURCE: Sony Music

TIM BURTON'S CORPSE BRIDE soundtrack news

Tim Burton's Corpse Bride Soundtrack Rises to the Occasion With New Music From Danny Elfman

BURBANK, CA -- 08/25/05 -- Three-time Oscar®-nominated composer Danny Elfman has once again joined forces with director Tim Burton to create the evocative and atmospheric original score for Tim Burton's Corpse Bride, the eagerly awaited new stop-motion animation film starring Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter and Emily Watson.

Set for release September 20th on Warner Sunset Records/Warner Bros. Records, "The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack to Tim Burton's Corpse Bride" highlights an original score by Elfman, who has previously collaborated with Burton on such acclaimed films as Beetlejuice, Batman, Big Fish and the recent Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Elfman relates, "Like The Nightmare Before Christmas, writing songs for Corpse Bride was a real treat. Tim's visuals make the perfect compliment for the kind of stuff I love doing most. These wonderfully fun, dark, offbeat tales are the perfect platform for me to write odd, slightly twisted, obscure styles such as my favorite musical era... 1930s jazz. I only hope we get to do more in the future." The soundtrack also features four new songs written by Elfman, three of which include lyrics co-written by John August, including "According To Plan" (performed by Albert Finney, Joanna Lumley, Tracey Ullman and Paul Whitehouse); "Tears To Shed" (performed by Helena Bonham Carter, Jane Horrocks and Enn Reitel), "Remains Of The Day" (performed by Danny Elfman) and "The Wedding Song," written by Danny Elfman (performed by Danny Elfman, Jane Horrocks, Paul Baker, Alison Jiear and Gary Martin).

Continuing in the dark, romantic tradition of The Nightmare Before Christmas and Edward Scissorhands, Tim Burton's Corpse Bride tells the story of Victor (Johnny Depp), who is whisked away to the underworld to marry the mysterious Corpse Bride (Helena Bonham Carter) while his real bride, Victoria (Emily Watson), waits bereft in the Land of the Living.

SOURCE: Warner Sunset and Warner Bros. Kent, who has scored more than 30 films including "Fight Club" and "Wedding Crashers," was nominated for a Golden Globe for his music for "Sideways" and earned BMI Film Music Awards for "Legally Blonde," "Legally Blonde 2," and "Freaky Friday."

The music for "Just Like Heaven" echoes and mirrors the film's narrative and emotional arcs, providing subtle counterpoint to the movie's action while illuminating the characters and their motivations.

"Just Like Heaven" is a romantic comedy based on French novelist Marc Levy's bestselling debut, If Only It Were True. Directed by Mark Waters ("Mean Girls" "Freaky Friday"), "Just Like Heaven" stars Reese Witherspoon, Mark Ruffalo, Donal Logue, Dina Waters, Ben Shenkman and Jon Heder.

Set in San Francisco, "Just Like Heaven" is a romantic tale of love across the boundaries of our physical and metaphysical worlds. It follows David (Mark Ruffalo) who is visited in his new apartment by Elizabeth, a pretty, but controlling woman who appears insisting the apartment is hers and then mysteriously disappears. Convinced Elizabeth is a ghost, David tries to help her cross over to the other side, but Elizabeth is equally convinced that she is still alive. As Elizabeth and David search for the truth about her present state, their relationship deepens into love. Unfortunately, they have little time before their prospects for a future together permanently fade away.

Just Like Heaven -- Music From The Original Motion Picture Tracklisting

Just Like Heaven -- Katie Melua
Just My Imagination (Running Away With Me) -- Pete Yorn
Lust For Life -- Kay Hanley
Good Times Roll -- The Cars
Ghostbusters -- Bowling For Soup
Brass In Pocket -- Kelis
I Put A Spell On You -- Screamin' Jay Hawkins
Strange Invitation -- Beck
Spooky -- Imogen Heap
Jungle Fever -- Chakachas
Bad Case Of Lovin' You -- Emerson Hart
Colors -- Amos Lee
Just Like Heaven -- The Cure
Her Picture - Rolfe Kent
David Alone -- Rolfe Kent
I'm Seeing Someone -- Rolfe Kent
Machines Don't Know Everything -- Rolfe Kent
I Remember You -- Rolfe Kent

SOURCE: COLUMBIA RECORDS

EVERYTHING IS ILLUMINATED soundtrack due Sept 20

TVT SOUNDTRAX TO RELEASE ‘EVERYTHING IS ILLUMINATED’ SDTK ON SEPTEMBER 20th

FEATURING MUSIC FROM GOGOL BORDELLO, XX, XX, XX

TVT is proud to release the soundtrack for the forthcoming theatrical release Everything Is Illuminated. The soundtrack, released on September 20th features a score by composer Paul Cantelon (formerly of The Wild Colonials) and the music of the wildly inventive gypsy punk rock band Gogol Bordello, who make a cameo in the film and whose front man Eugene Hutz co-stars in the lead role opposite Elijah Wood. Hutz was originally approached to compose some music for the film and after an exhaustive casting search with no results, Liev Schreiber realized he had the perfect person to play the part right in front of him.

Everything Is Illuminated, to be released by Warner Independent Film on September 16th, is an adaptation of the novel by Jonathan Safran Foer and is the directorial debut of renowned actor Liev Schreiber. The story begins with an eccentric young man played by Elijah Wood traveling to the Ukraine to research his family roots, most importantly a mystery woman who helped his grandfather during World War II. His journey is aided by two locals played by Eugene Hutz in his first foray on the big screen and his ornery grandfather who goes nowhere without his insane dog. What starts out as a journey to piece together one family's story under the most absurd circumstances turns into a surprisingly meaningful journey with a powerful series of revelations.

EVERYTHING IS ILLUMINATED Original Motion Picture Soundtrack

1. The soundtrack to Valiant Walt Disney Pictures' newest computer-animated comedy-adventure, sets the tone for the heroic World War II tale by perfectly capturing the musical feel of the '30s and '40s with original music composed by four-time Academy Award(R) and two-time Grammy(R) nominee George Fenton (Gandhi, Dangerous Liaisons).

Valiant, the newest offering from the producer of Shrek and Shrek 2, is a tale of a brave-but-undersized pigeon (voiced by Ewan McGregor) who dreams of joining the elite Royal Homing Pigeon Service and serving crown and country during World War II. With a shortage of wing power in the royal fleet due to increased attacks by a brigade of vicious enemy falcons, the mission falls to Valiant and the unlikely heroes of Squad F to try to save the day. With a wing and a prayer, Valiant and his fine-feathered pals fly into harm's way and prove that it's not the size of the wingspan that counts, but the size of the spirit. Walt Disney Pictures' Valiant will open in theatres nationwide on August 19, 2005.

Composer George Fenton captures the spirit of the movie with a sweeping, diverse score performed by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra that shows life for the Royal Homing Pigeons is anything but a day in the park. Fenton hearkens back to the era of classic World War II films with the proud, martial air of "Valiant" and "March of the R.H.P.S." The playful swing music of "Arrival at Camp" lightens the mood before lindy hopping listeners into the dramatic and ominous "Von Talon and the Bastion." "Winged Heroes (Adagio and Fanfare)" takes the score full circle with its triumphantly victorious tone.

Rounding out the soundtrack is the end credit song "Shoo Shoo Baby" performed by recording artists Mis-Teeq and produced by Phil Ramone.

On August 16, 2005, the Valiant soundtrack will be available wherever music is sold.

Maggie Gyllenhaal and HAPPY ENDINGS soundtrack

The multi-talented Maggie Gyllenhaal makes her recording debut with several outstanding performances alongside tracks from Calexico for award-winning writer-director Don Roos' quirky new film Happy Endings. The August 2 release also features songs by Greyboy and the Black Heart Procession. As intertwining storylines weave the lives of assorted characters together throughout the film, this eclectic line-up of music sets the stage for each story.

Maggie Gyllenhaal, who also stars in Happy Endings, sings three songs on the soundtrack including Billy Joel's "Just the Way You Are" plus two original tunes. Gyllenhaal's breakthrough performance in the provocative, controversial film Secretary earned her a Golden Globe nomination for best actress, and put her on the map as a gifted and acclaimed talent. Since then, she has appeared a number of films including Adaptation, Confessions of a Dangerous Mind and Mona Lisa Smile, as well as the Tony Kushner play Homebody/Kabul.

Tucson, Arizona-based Calexico's musical roots are planted in Southwestern American and Mexican culture, and soak up influence through the Americas, Africa and around the world. Since 1996, their mellow, desert-rock sounds have found a growing fanbase, and collaborations include work with musicians such as Richard Buckner, Lisa Germano, Vic Chesnutt, Neko Case and Victoria Williams.

Happy Endings is the latest film from writer-director Don Roos (The Opposite of Sex, Bounce), who's burgeoning film career has earned him the respect of critics and fans alike. Happy Endings opened the 2005 Sundance Film Festival to rave reviews, and features an ensemble cast including Maggie Gyllenhaal, Steve Coogan, Lisa Kudrow, Laura Dern, Jason Ritter, Tom Arnold, Bobby Cannavale and Jesse Bradford.

"...[Gyllenhaal] turns out to be a riveting torch singer..." - Lisa
Schwarzbaum, Entertainment Weekly

"...a plaintive cover of Billy Joel's 'Just the Way You Are,' reaches
the core of something beautiful and moving." - Kristi Mitsuda, Indiewire

"Gyllenhaal, in addition to her lively perf, exhibits a not-bad set of
pipes..." - Todd McCarthy, Variety

MURDERBALL soundtrack now available

Commanded by tracks from Ministry, Ween, The Moldy Peaches and Sam Prekop, and woven together by a striking score by composer Jamie Saft, Music from the film Murderball captures all the grit and emotion of the award-winning, action-packed documentary.

Both intimate and adrenaline-filled, music fuels the tale of the U.S. Quad Rugby Team's quest for gold in the Paralympic Games in Athens, Greece. Mirroring the range of emotions in the film, this highly listenable collection of songs features two churning tracks from Ministry, electronic jam from guitar gurus Ween, a sweetly satirical tune from The Moldy Peaches, as well as a track from Chicago icon/The Sea and Cake's Sam Prekop. Keyboardist Jamie Saft lays down a stunning score to round out the album.

Full-contact wheelchair rugby, a cut-throat rivalry between the U.S. and Canada, and compelling personal on and off-the-court stories are the thrust of the film by Henry Alex Rubin, Dana Adam Shapiro and Jeff Mandel. The filmmakers smash stereotypes about the handicapped, exploring the lives of men who have to redefine for themselves what it is to be a winner, what it is to be a man, and what it is to live a full life.

Murderball has earned tremendous success. The documentary garnered the Audience Award and a Special Jury Prize for Editing at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival, screened at the prestigious New Directors/New Films series, and is already generating a lot of critical acclaim. The soundtrack album will be released on August 2nd at the suggested retail price of $15.98 to US retail outlets through Nile Rodgers' Sumthing Else Music, the industry leader for licensing and distributing videogame soundtracks.

The Conker: Live and Reloaded Original Soundtrack features original musical compositions and arrangements by Robin Beanland who is best known for his music in Conker's Bad Fur Day, Killer Instinct, and Jet Force Gemini. Nile Rodgers, the music veteran and album producer said, "Robin's music for Conker: Live and Reloaded runs a zigzag course from snaptop groove guitar rock to wildly funny operatic parody." Rodgers also performs guitar on the cut 'Surf Punks.'

Furthermore, the soundtrack sports exclusive performances from guitar virtuoso Dweezil Zappa, son of the legendary Frank Zappa, and electronic dance trio Rabbit In The Moon. Commenting on these collaborations Rodgers said, "When I got a copy of Robin's track 'Surf Punks' I asked Dweezil if he wanted to play somebody else's song with me as a duet. He said cool and we just went into the studio and ripped it. I really respect people who can interpret other people's music."

Rodgers added, "Rare really took a cutting-edge leap by having Rabbit In The Moon remix and perform 'Rock Solid'. On the streets RITM are known for their over the top live performances as well their infectious beats."

Packaged with the CD is a free bonus DVD featuring exclusive bonus tracks, a hilarious "mockumentary" tracking Conker's illustrious career, exclusive desktop wallpaper and other Conker: Live and Reloaded content.

Release of the soundtrack follows the arrival on June 21, 2005 of gaming's notoriously naughty squirrel—Conker— in an all-new Xbox Live-enabled team-based shooter, Conker: Live and Reloaded. The game features intense Deathmatch and Campaign story line modes via Xbox Live and System Link, and players can compete as one of six combat specialists across multi-mission campaigns covering Old War and Future War. The warfare promises to deliver the non-stop action, humor, and innuendos Conker is famous for. In addition, the critically acclaimed single-player game, Conker's Bad Fur Day, has been completely recreated for Xbox with stunning graphics, true 5.1 music and audio mixes and unparalleled attitude. Without any dialogue, images and music blend to tell the noble and emotional story of one of Earth's most resilient and determined species. "Alex's soundtrack conveys the character of the penguins, the emotional heat and the epic adventure of their arctic journey," says Adam Leipzig, President of National Geographic Feature Films. "It's a great score from a great composer that deserves to be noticed."

"The chance to be a voice for such beautiful and dynamic characters rarely comes to a film composer," says composer Alex Wurman. "The lack of verbal presence from the lead role was liberating."

Fred Selden's flute follows the steps of the penguins throughout their challenging journey and subtly evokes the difficulties, the joys, the dangers, and the sorrows that the penguins encounter. Alex's score stays fresh and strongly evokes what the images or the narration cannot always explain. "There are no actors or dialog, so the film rides on a marriage of Alex's music with the film images." explains Leipzig.

Salon's Stephanie Zacharek writes "there's more drama, and more heartbreak, in 'March of the Penguins' than in most movies that are actually scripted to tug at our feelings." Narrated by Morgan Freeman, this film - directed by Luc Jacquet and presented in the United States by National Geographic Feature Films and Warner Independent - tells with vivid images the dramatic and emotional story of the penguins in their quest for love, family and procreation. Luc Jacquet and his crew followed the penguins in Antarctica during their thousand year-old pilgrimage to meet their mate and preserve their species. More than a documentary, March of the Penguins enters the soul of a deserted continent where the birds with no wings must face snowstorms, hunger, loneliness and predators in order to give birth to and protect their offspring.

"The images on the screen provided all the inspiration one could want. They challenged me again and again to match their beauty and emotional range," says Wurman. "From them I learned that courage does not need to be understood, only found."

After studying music at the American Conservatory of music in Chicago, Wurman started his film career composing and arranging for Hans Zimmer, contributing to blockbusters such as Armageddon, A League of Their Own and The Lion King. Independent films started coming his way, and soon he was working with hip directors such as John August, Doug Liman and Ron Shelton, with whom he has collaborated several times. Winning the respect and admiration of directors, producers and reviewers, Wurman's resume reflects the quality and diversity of his talent, boasting films such as Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, Thirteen Conversations About One Thing, Hollywood Homicide, Anchorman and Play It to the Bone.

March of the Penguins is screening at 700 theaters across the country as of July 22, 2005.

New BATTLESHIP POTEMKIN soundtrack from the PET SHOP BOYS

The Pet Shop Boys and the Dresdner Sinfoniker (conducted by Jonathan Stockhammer) will release their version of the Battleship Potemkin soundtrack this September. On June 21, La-La Land Records will release the Battlestar Galactica: Season One soundtrack, featuring more than 78 minutes of the best musical moments from season one of this highly acclaimed new series.

Battlestar Galactica: Season One contains both the US and UK main title themes as well as music composed by Bear McCreary for the series, which TV Guide declared “a breakaway hit…poised to replace Star Trek as TV’s definitive sci-fi series.” The CD packaging features exclusive liner notes from McCreary and the show’s executive producer David Eick.

Composer Bear McCreary is a classically trained composer with a degree in Composition and Recording Arts from the prestigious USC Thornton School of Music. He has composed score for over thirty independent films, including director Jon Chu’s musical short When the Kids Are Away and the Discovery Channel miniseries The 5 Coolest Things. McCreary was among a handful of select composers to have studied independently with the late film music legend Elmer Bernstein (The Magnificent Seven).

While some of the names may be the same, this is not your father’s Battlestar Galactica! Captain “Husker” Adama (Edward James Olmos) and President Larua Roslin (Mary McDonnell) lead the Battlestar Galactica crew. They are trying to locate the fabled 13th Colony of humans, planet Earth, to join with their brethren against the Cylons which have taken over their homeland. The Cylons, which can look like humans and even be programmed to think they are, aren’t the only threat, as morale and the quantity of supplies are always an issue. In an interesting casting choice, Richard Hatch (who played Captain Apollo in the original series), is cast as villain Tom Zarek, a political prisoner who has spent the past 20 years in jail for his participation in the bombing of a government building.

"With its unique combination of intricate character arcs, dark ambience and gritty battle sequences, Battlestar Galactica afforded me countless opportunities for musical exploration,” said McCreary. “Fans will immediately recognize all their favorite musical moments from the first season, including the lush orchestral works featured in the dynamic two-part season finale. I am extremely proud of this collection and look forward to continuing this musical journey into the second season and beyond."

The second season of Battlestar Galactica will begin airing in July on the Sci Fi Channel. The soundtrack from the Battlestar Galactica mini-series is also available from La-La Land Records.

KNIGHT RIDER television soundtrack due in July

New 80s TV soundtrack for "Kinght Rider" coming from Film Score Magazine:

Knight Rider (1982-1986) was a hit NBC-TV series starring David Hasselhoff as a lone crusader armed with "Kitt," the world's most sophisticated car. This premiere CD features original soundtrack music from the first half of the show's first season, produced in conjunction with the composer, Stu Phillips, and his Wrightview Productions.

The theme to Knight Rider (co-composed by Phillips and Glen A. Larson) is one of the most memorable of the period, with a "driving" groove for electronics and rhythm section that has been sampled by several hip-hop artists. The theme makes its stereo debut here and has never sounded better.

In addition to the main and end titles, this CD features lengthly suites from Stu Phillips's scores for the series' two-hour pilot, "Knight of the Phoenix," and four episodes: "Not a Drop to Drink," "Trust Doesn't Rust" (guest starring the evil prototype of Kitt, "Karr"), "Forget Me Not" and "Inside Out." Willie himself wails through a new rendition of the "Dukes of Hazzard" theme song, Waylon Jennings' "Good Ol' Boys," produced by James Stroud.

A rollicking cross-section of American Southern and classic rock music, The Dukes Of Hazzard - Music From The Motion Picture compiles definitive tracks by the Allman Brothers, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble, Lynyrd Skynyrd, the Charlie Daniels Band, Molly Hatchet, Montgomery Gentry, Ram Jam, Southern Culture on the Skids, The Blueskins, Blues Explosion, and The James Gang. Bookending the soundtrack album are two ribald riddles posed by Willie Nelson (as "Uncle Jesse"). The renowned musical tastemaker Nic Harcourt (host of "Morning Becomes Eclectic") served as music supervisor for the film.

"The Dukes Of Hazzard" is an action comedy inspired by the hit television series that ran from 1979-1985. Directed by Jay Chandrasekhar ("Club Dread, Super Troopers"), "The Dukes Of Hazzard" stars Johnny Knoxville, Seann William Scott, Jessica Simpson, Burt Reynolds and Joe Don Baker with Lynda Carter and Willie Nelson.

Set in the present day, "The Dukes of Hazzard" follows the adventures of two "good ol' boy" cousins -- Bo (Seann William Scott) and Luke (Johnny Knoxville) Duke -- who with the help of their eye-catching cousin Daisy (Jessica Simpson) and moonshine-running Uncle Jesse (Willie Nelson), try and save the family farm from being destroyed by Hazzard County's corrupt commissioner Boss Hogg (Burt Reynolds). Their efforts constantly find the "Duke Boys" eluding authorities in "The General Lee," their famed

1969 orange Dodge Charger that keeps them one step ahead of the dimwitted antics of the small southern town's Sheriff Roscoe P. Coltrane (M.C. Gainey).

SOURCE: COLUMBIA RECORDS/SONY MUSIC SOUNDTRAX

WAR OF THE WORLDS soundtrack now available

WAR OF THE WORLDS
DIRECTED BY STEVEN SPIELBERG
STARRING TOM CRUISE
WITH ORIGINAL MUSIC COMPOSED AND CONDUCTED BY
FIVE-TIME ACADEMY AWARD®-WINNING COMPOSER
JOHN WILLIAMS

ORIGINAL MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK NOW AVAILABLE ON DECCA

(New York, NY) The soundtrack to one of this summer’s most anticipated motion pictures, War of the Worlds, featuring original music by John Williams (Star Wars, Jaws, E.T., Harry Potter, Schindler’s List), is now available on Decca, released June 28th. War of the Worlds, which is directed by Steven Spielberg and stars Tom Cruise, marks Williams’s 21st collaboration with Spielberg and will be released worldwide today.

On June 29th, 2005, Earth goes to war. From Paramount Pictures and DreamWorks Pictures comes the motion picture event: War of the Worlds, directed by Steven Spielberg and starring international superstar Tom Cruise. A contemporary retelling of H.G. Wells’s seminal classic, the sci-fi adventure thriller reveals the extraordinary battle for the future of humankind through the eyes of one American family fighting to survive it.

Williams has created some of the most powerful and enduring film music of our time. Lending his musical talents to War of the Worlds, Williams brings forth a feeling of raw emotion that puts the finishing touch on Spielberg’s intense storytelling. In keeping with the tradition of Jaws, this dark and sweeping score will have the audiences on the edge of their seats with anticipation. The profound music evokes a sense of desperation while still capturing a ray of hope, making for a beautiful and memorable listening experience. Long after the credits have rolled, the moviegoer will be able to recall the intense emotion felt by each character just by listening to the chilling soundtrack.

With a career spanning over four decades, Williams has received 43 Oscar® nominations (more than any living person), and has won 5 Oscars®, 18 Grammy® Awards, 4 Golden Globes, 4 Emmy® Awards and 6 BAFTA Awards from the British Academy of Film and Television Arts. His first Oscar® was for 1971’s Fiddler on the Roof. He reached a turning point in his career when Steven Spielberg approached him to score his early movies. In quick succession, this led to Williams’ second Oscar®, for Jaws, and his introduction to George Lucas, who then hired him to score the Star Wars saga, bringing him his third Oscar®. He later went on to compose music for a host of blockbusters, including Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Superman, E.T. (winning Oscar® number 4), and the Indiana Jones movies. After his 5th Oscar® win (for Schindler’s List), John maintained an extraordinary creative pace composing with scores for nine films in just four years including Saving Private Ryan and The Patriot. On June 23, 2000, he became the first inductee into the Hollywood Bowl Hall of Fame. Williams also served as musical director for the 74th annual Academy Awards® in March of 2002, where he received his 40th and 41st nominations for his scores for the films Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone and A.I. Artificial Intelligence. Williams received the prestigious Kennedy Center Honor in December of 2004, and earlier this year he completed the long-awaited score for Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith.

SOURCE: PRESS RELEASE

STEALTH soundtrack features Incubus, David Bowie, BT

Stealth director Rob Cohen personally selected SoCal rockers Incubus to write three songs specifically for the film, something they had never done before. Or did it? In Capricorn One, a misguided attempt to save a failing space program results in a faked landing on Mars. They almost get away with it, too, until the real unmanned space capsule burns up during re-entry and the three "astronauts" find themselves facing certain execution. Directed by Peter Hyams, the film stars Elliot Gould, James Brolin, Sam Waterston, Brenda Vaccaro, Hal Holbrook, Karen Black, O.J. Simpson, and Telly Savalas.

Jerry Goldsmith's score unknowingly creates a template for the next quarter-century of action scores. The escape from captivity and subsequent pursuit by government helicopters affords Goldsmith some of the most exciting action set-pieces of his lengthy career. The justifiably famous LP released at the time of the movie's debut was a re-recording made by Goldsmith, containing edited highlights. Intrada now presents a world premiere of the actual soundtrack recordings. Performances are crisper and cues have significant complex detail deleted from the LP.

In addition, this CD offers many tracks never before available, including the dynamic hillside appearance of those two deadly helicopters. The entire CD is presented in stereo from the original
session elements.

Limited to 3000 copies.

SOURCE: INTRADA PRESS RELEASE

CHARLIE & THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY soundtrack due 7/12

BURBANK, CA. (Warner Sunset Records) - The highly anticipated soundtrack from Tim Burton's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, starring Johnny Depp, which opens nationwide on July 15th featuring original music and songs by award winning composer and musician Danny Elfman (Spider-man, Good Will Hunting) will be released by Warner Sunset Records on July 12th.

For Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (the composer's 11th collaboration with director Tim Burton), Elfman has composed the score as well as the original song "Wonka's Welcome Song," (with lyrics written by Elfman and screenwriter John August, and music by Elfman). Elfman has also written the music for 4 other tracks with lyrics based on the lyric chants in the "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" book by Roald Dahl. Elfman wanted to stay true to Dahl's words in the book, which had a wonderful rhythm to them.

For the first time since The Night Before Christmas, Elfman sings lyrics for the 4 Oompa-Loompa songs about four of the children who win tickets to tour Willy Wonka's incredible chocolate factory - "Augustus Gloop," "Violet Beauregarde," "Mike Teavee," and "Veruca Salt," as well as the new original song "Wonka's Welcome Song." Elfman's orchestral score and sweet new pop songs perfectly set the mood for this visually stylistic film. "This is the 11th film I've worked on with my friend and collaborator Danny Elfman," said Burton. "Each time has been different and Danny is always an important character in the telling of the film. He has created yet another fantastic score that successfully reflects the movie."

Burton continued, "What was unique about Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was the creation of the Oompa-Loompa songs. It was great fun to see Danny work within a number of different musical genres." "The great part of working with Tim on the music was that he kept throwing me off center by suggesting different styles of music that I wasn't expecting. His ideas have so often led me to places that I wouldn't have thought of, but remain my favorites. In particular on the songs for 'Charlie' Tim and I worked very closely together and the challenge was to give each song for each child their own distinct feel. 'Augustus Gloop' was inspired by big brassy Bollywood production pieces; 'Violet Beauregarde,' the gum-chewer, threw back to a retro 70's funk feel; 'Mike Teavee,' needed something frenetic and hyperactive like he is, the short attention span video game rock kid; and 'Veruca Salt' who goes down the garbage chute has lyrics about fish heads," said Elfman.

The Grammy-winning, Oscar-nominated Elfman has been working in the motion-picture arena since 1985, when director Tim Burton - fascinated by Elfman's playfully macabre music for the cult L.A. rock band Oingo Boingo - called him to write the music for Pee-Wee's Big Adventure. The Elfman-Burton collaboration continued with the clever and quirky music for Beetlejuice (1988) and reached a high point with the massive, gothic score for the original film Batman (1989), which won a Grammy for the composer - and legions of fans, who felt that his Wagnerian approach gave the comics' Dark Knight a new and entirely appropriate sound.

Since then, Elfman has scored nearly all of Burton's cinematic excursions, including the touching Edward Scissorhands (1990), with its delicately lyrical choral passages; the funhouse-from-hell music for the mad Penguin and Catwoman in Batman Returns (1992); the songs and score for the imaginative Halloween fable The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993); the '50s-style sci-fi score for Mars Attacks! (1996); the intense and powerfully orchestrated Sleepy Hollow (1999); and the percussion-driven Planet of the Apes (2001). Five of Elfman's eight Grammy nominations are for Burton films.

Acclaimed director Tim Burton brings his vividly imaginative style to the beloved Roald Dahl classic Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, about eccentric candy-maker Willy Wonka (Johnny Depp) and Charlie Bucket (Freddie Highmore), a good-hearted boy from a poor family who lives in the shadow of Wonka's extraordinary factory. Lewis’ best-selling classic, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe.

EMI Music’s Nashville-based EMI CMG will release both “inspired by” soundtracks and has announced an all-star line up for the first in the series of releases: an Inspirational soundtrack CD, Music Inspired By: The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe, featuring recordings from artists that combined have sold in excess of 23 million albums.

Five-time Grammy Award Winner Steven Curtis Chapman leads the pack with the project’s debut single and video, “Remembering You,” which will release to Christian radio formats nationwide on August 5th. Jars of Clay ("Waiting for the World to Fall"), Jeremy Camp ("Open Your Eyes"), TobyMac, Nichole Nordeman ("I Will Believe"), Rebecca St. James ("Lion"), Delirious ("Stronger"), Kutless, Bethany Dillon ("Hero"), Chris Tomlin ("You're The One") and David Crowder Band round-out the line up thus far. The Inspirational CD will release on September 27th.

A second soundtrack of songs inspired by the film will release October 25th and feature mainstream pop and rock artists.

Regarding his participation in the soundtrack, Steven Curtis Chapman commented, "So much has already been brilliantly communicated by C.S. Lewis with this story, so writing for it was kind of an overwhelming task," said Steven Curtis Chapman. "This story leaves me with wanting to remember what it means to experience Spring or new life. "Remembering You" is a song from the perspective of a lot of the characters at the end of the story saying, 'whenever I see the first signs of spring, I'll be remembering you, Aslan, the story and what is to come.'"

"EMI CMG's partnership with Disney and Walden Media holds an unprecedented visibility and marketing opportunity for the participating artists, allowing their music to reach a global audience," stated EMI CMG's President and CEO, Bill Hearn. "Disney and Walden Media have shown a tremendous amount of passion for the music and we are excited for them to incorporate this ever-expanding genre that perfectly compliments the theme of the film."

Promotions for the Inspirational Inspired-by project began recently, when HarperCollins, publisher of the Chronicles of Narnia book series hosted a celebration in New York for the forthcoming movie release in conjunction with the American Booksellers Association.

Sparrow Records singer/songwriter Bethany Dillon premiered her song, "Hero," from the project at that celebration. Promotions will also include soundtrack music being featured as part of the interactive marketing plans with www.narnia.com and its development of NarniaMusic.com, which will feature artist interviews, shots from the studio, song samples, promotions and more.

Source: EMI PRESS RELEASE

DEEP BLUE soundtrack now available

FIVE-TIME OSCAR NOMINEE GEORGE FENTON CREATES RICHLY ATMOSPHERIC SCORE FOR UNDERSEA DOCUMENTRY FILM DEEP BLUE SONY CLASSICAL CD RELEASED JUNE 14, 2005

Fenton Conducts Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra In Original Score That Reflects The Film’s Images Of The Wild Grandeur Of Life Undersea

Miramax Releases Deep Blue On June 3 In New York & Los Angeles

An innovative motion picture experience that takes audiences on an epic journey through life on the ocean floor, Miramax Pictures’ Deep Blue features a richly atmospheric musical score by five-time Oscar nominee George Fenton. A co-production of BBC Worldwide and Greenlight Media, the film – narrated by Sir Michael Gambon (Dumbledore in the upcoming Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire), and directed and written by Alastair Fothergill and Andy Byatt – opens in New York and Los Angeles on June 3rd, 2005. The composer conducts the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra – the first time the orchestra has recorded a new film score – on the original soundtrack recording, which Sony Classical will release on Tuesday, June 14, 2005.

Nominated five times for the Academy Award – for his scores for Gandhi, Cry Freedom, Dangerous Liaisons and The Fisher King, and his title song from Cry Freedom – Fenton has been writing scores for film, TV and the theater since 1974.

Deep Blue brings the composer back to the world of documentary film, where he has been acclaimed for his scores for such documentary TV series as The Trials of Life, Life in the Freezer, Beyond the Clouds, Shanghai Vice and The Blue Planet. So popular was his music for The Blue Planet – produced by Alastair Fothergill, who co-wrote and co-directed Deep Blue – that Fenton has conducted concert performances of The Blue Planet Live! at the BBC Proms in London’s Hyde Park and in Hong Kong, Copenhagen and Los Angeles at the Hollywood Bowl.

Deep Blue takes the viewer down to the depths of the ocean floor to explore the monumental yet fragile system of life that exists there. Inspired by the BBC series The Blue Planet, the film takes full advantage of cinematic scope and scale to capture the vastness of the undersea world and the constant danger and excitement that exist there.

Fenton’s film credits also include scores for this summer’s Bewitched, Hitch, Stage Beauty, The Madness of King George, You’ve Got Mail, Anna and the King, Ever After, Shadowlands, Groundhog Day and Sweet Home Alabama, as well as English director Ken Loach’s films Land and Freedom, My Name is Joe and Sweet Sixteen. The Dukes of Hazzard, the feature film based on the popular 1980s television show of the same name. To create the sounds of Hazzard County, Barr will employ ZZ Top's legendary Texan guitarist Billy Gibbons for an authentic classic rock feel. The film, a Southern-fried action comedy starring Johnny Knoxville, Seann William Scott and Jessica Simpson as the cousins Duke, Willie Nelson as Uncle Jesse and Burt Reynolds as Boss Hogg, will be released August 5. This is the second film Barr has scored for director Jay Chandrasekhar, the two previously collaborated on 2004's dark comedy Club Dread.

Barr's score for The Dukes of Hazzard inflects the free-wheeling good times that come with car chases, short-shorts wearing Southern belles and seeing right prevail over wrong in Hazzard County. Barr, who describes the music as "Allman Brothers meets AC/DC meets ZZ Top," will feature ZZ Top's Billy Gibbons on the guitar-heavy classic rock and roll score, and use Beck's keyboardist and rhythm section. As one would expect, a healthy dose of Hazzard County fiddle will round out the score.

A gifted musician who began studying at age four, Barr has studied and performed all over the world. After studying an eclectic array of strings and percussion instruments in Japan and experiencing operas and orchestras in Bali and China, Barr toured Europe with the Julliard Cello Ensemble, and after graduating college, joined the industrial band V.A.S.T., playing guitar and electric cello. Looking to explore a career in film music, he moved to Los Angeles in 1996, where he met Academy-Award winning composer Hans Zimmer, who mentored him for several months before he landed his first feature. Barr has since scored dozens of films including From Dusk Til Dawn 3 and Cabin Fever, as well as several TV series. He resides outside Los Angeles with his wife, recording artist Lisbeth Scott, well-known as the soloist for films including The Passion of the Christ, Shrek and Shrek 2.

Source: PRESS RELEASE

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://movie-soundtracks.blogspot.com/2005/06/yee-haaw-nathan-barr-zz-top-and-dukes.html' title='YEE-HAAW!!! But when a random crime escalates into a deadly standoff, Talley finds himself thrust into a situation far more volatile and terrifying than anything he could ever imagine! HOSTAGE also stars Kevin Pollack (THE USUAL SUSPECTS, THE WHOLE NINE YARDS), Jonathan Tucker (THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE), and Ben Foster (SIX FEET UNDER, THE PUNISHER). The film is based on the best-selling novel by Robert Crais.

In his native France, Alexandre Desplat began composing for film in the mid 1990s. In 2000, THE LUZHIN DEFENSE, starring John Turturro and Emily Watson, was released in the United States, with a soundtrack recording on Silva Screen. It wasn’t until his score for the 2003 film GIRL WITH A PEARL EARRING that Desplat’s name began circulating by film score aficionados in the United States. The score eventually earned him BAFTA and Golden Globe™ nominations.

HOSTAGE will be released on DVD on June 21. The Superb Records release HOSTAGE—Original Motion Picture Score, composed by Alexandre Desplat, arrived in stores June 7, 2005.

BATMAN BEGINS soundtrack to be released 6/14

On June 15th, Warner Bros. Pictures' Batman Begins, from director Christopher Nolan, the summer's most anticipated theatrical release, opens nationwide featuring a score that will immediately make music history -- a unique collaboration between two of the screen's most honored and respected composers, Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard, working together for the first time. Warner Sunset Records will release the Batman Begins soundtrack on June 14th. The soundtrack contains 12 tracks composed by Zimmer and Howard and is 60 minutes in length.

"Watching this unique collaboration between two great talents has been constantly fascinating and exciting. Their contribution to Batman Begins has been immeasurable," said Nolan.

"Collaborating on this project has been a lot of fun. Since Batman Begins is a character driven story, we wanted to give Batman credibility through the music. We've created a score that tried to stay true to the duality of the character, capturing the motion, energy, darkness and rage of Batman," said Zimmer and Howard.

Batman Begins explores the origins of the Batman legend and the Dark Knight's emergence as a force for good in Gotham. In the wake of his parents' murder, disillusioned industrial heir Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) travels the world seeking the means to fight injustice and turn fear against those who prey on the fearful. He returns to Gotham and unveils his alter-ego: Batman, a masked crusader who uses his strength, intellect and an array of high tech deceptions to fight the sinister forces that threaten the city.

Zimmer is one of the most respected and talented composers in the business with over 100 film scores to his credit highlighted by his Oscar winning score for The Lion King as well as scores for Oscar winning films including Gladiator, Rainman, and Driving Miss Daisy. Night Shyamalan's The Village, for which he received an Oscar nomination, as well as The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable and Signs. This original and melodious score also includes the song "When I'm Coming Home" (written by Jesper Winge Leisner) performed by Andrew Strong.

New European wonder of music for film, Johan Soderqvist, has composed a score that balances between truth and lies, darkness and light. Johan Soderqvist has the energy and the creativity of a young Gabriel Yared when he was working with Jean-Jacques Beinex in France. Instead of coming up with a typical and easy dark score, Johan has created a musical suite that expresses beautifully and harmoniously the complexity of the drama that surrounds the characters of Brothers. The music is a mixture of Middle Eastern and traditional European influence where the bandoneon and the Arabic oud are harmoniously married with finesse. Johan has found beauty in the ugly and ugliness in the beautiful. His music both embraces the characters when they seak comfort and graces the story with light and darkness.

Directed by Susanne Bier (the award-winning director of the Dogma film Open Hearts), Brothers vibrantly tells the lives of two very different brothers that become simultaneously intertwined and thrust apart. Jannik (Nikolaj Lie Kaas) is released from prison and embraced by his brother Michael (Ulrich Thomsen), an upright soldier and family man to be deployed in Afghanistan. Back home, Jannik gets back to his life as an alcoholic deviant son. Shortly after his deployment, Michael's helicopter crashes in the mountains of Afghanistan and he is presumed dead. Jannik summons previously untapped maturity, aiding and comforting Michael's two daughters and wife Sarah (Connie Nielsen). As Sarah and Jannik grow closer, their dependence intensify. Michael is found alive. He comes back, holder of a terrible secret that will change his family life forever....Brothers has been produced by the famous Danish studio, Zentropa (home of Lars Von Trier and movies such as Dogville, The Celebration, Dancer In The Dark).

The soundtrack of Brothers also features the beautiful song "When I'm Coming Home" writen by Jesper Winge Leisner. Worldwide famous singer, Andrew Strong (star of The Commitments and the creator of platinum albums such as Out Of Time and Gypsy's Kiss) performs it. His vocals are delicately performed and maintain an untamed trace of life experience. This song has the innocence of a lullaby and the comfort of sweet home.

Source: Milan Entertainment

GO FIGURE soundtrack due 6/7 (Disney Channel)

Walt Disney Records to release Go Figure soundtrack for Disney Channel original movie. When renowned Russian figure skating coach Natasha Goberman offers Katelin a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to train at the private academy where she teaches, Katelin will sacrifice anything and everything. What she doesn't understand is how challenging that sacrifice will be -- she must join the girls' hockey team to obtain the only scholarship to the school. She soon realizes that she also must keep her figure skating aspirations a secret from her teammates, who make fun of "twirl girls." As Katelin struggles to balance her hockey and ice skating training, she discovers how much she enjoys the team atmosphere -- and her teammates come to appreciate Katelin's tenacity and grace. Looking out over the horizon shows no movie coming about that phenomenal band from the UK or its many tribute bands around the world. Quite differently, Yes is a new "opposites attract" movie from Sally Potter that travels around the world as a multi-cultural affair ignites between an Irish American scientist and a Lebanese surgeon (exiled in London where he works as a cook). Soundtracks have always been very strong elements in Potter's films (Orlando, The Tango Lesson, The Man Who Cried), and this newest follows the mold. Read on!

"From the Warner Bros. archives of vintage M-G-M television material and Norman Felton's Arena Productions comes this doubleheader of rare projects: Jericho (1966), a short-lived CBS action-adventure series scored by much of the staff from The Man From U.N.C.L.E.; and The Ghostbreaker (1965), a busted pilot with a score by John Williams."

"Jericho was a WWII adventure series following three Allied specialists on secret missions throughout Europe. The theme and second episode were scored by Jerry Goldsmith, replacing a theme by Lalo Schifrin who had scored the pilot. Goldsmith's and Schifrin's efforts are presented along with other scores by Morton Stevens, Gerald Fried and Richard Shores."

"The Ghostbreaker was a one-hour pilot starring Kerwin Mathews as a parapsychologist investigator. John (then "Johnny") Williams wrote a dynamite theme that compares favorably to his TV work for Irwin Allen, and a creepy score including harpsichord and solo soprano. All of us were surprised by the box office haul the film pulled in back in February, claiming #1 with $22M. The uplifting film has since grossed more than $50M, setting the stage for a very successful soundtrack. Adding to the popularity of the film, artists like India.Arie, Monica, Natalie Cole and other it-folk from R&B, pop and gospel all contribute compelling songs that create a depth most vocal soundtracks never reach. Notables include India Arie's "Purify Me," one of two lead off singles, and Cheryl Pepsi Riley's supreme cover of Joan Osborne's "One of Us."

Get mad, get black, get the soundtrack!

Fjords Away! 633 Squadron soundtrack, Submarine X-1 soundtrack

Hot on the heels of Film Score Magazine's Where Eagles Dare / Operation Crossbow 2CD set of classic Ron Goodwin soundtracks, two more WWII soundtracks by Goodwin on another double-CD release are now available from the label: 633 Squadron / Submarine X-1. Such is the setting for the newest soundtrack recording featuring acclaimed performer Joshua Bell (of The Red Violin fame). 2005 could be known as "The Year of the Bell" in classical circles: Josh is flying high right now, named Classical Artist of 2004 by Billboard, who also named his "Romance of the Violin" the Number 1 Classical Album of 2004 (a track of which is on the Ladies in Lavender soundtrack). His success takes him on a big US tour this year, from UCLA's Royce Hall to the Santa Fe Opera and on to Carnegie Hall in New York, but not before he appears with Dames Smith and Dench at the Tribeca Film Festival on April 23.

Ladies in Lavender composer Nigel Hess says Bell "takes the music I've written to a whole new level. Hearing him play was like stepping into a really expensive Rolls Royce." Alrighty then! You moviegoers who love movie music primarily exuded on violin will be riding in style soon. The soundtrack will be in stores April 26 on Sony Classical.

Hoosiers soundtrack double pumps!

March Madness... Swoosh, Swish and the Sweet 16. That's where we are right now in the NCAA basketball tourney, only 4 to remain this time next week. Yeah, all of the number one seeds are still alive, but none of 'em have "The Theme from Hoosiers" to warm up to as does every Indiana state basketball team, from the pipsqueeks to the pros. Thanks to the creative genius of composer Jerry Goldsmith and the passionate filmmaking of David Anspaugh, Hoosiers will always exist, even if not one Indiana b-ball team has it in 'em to get mad in March these days. While very much an 80s piece of music (Casio keyboards ruled), the spririt of this score keeps on winning year after year. Despite its greatness this thing still is not available on CD in the USA (dammit, where's my LP cleaning fluid?), though we're not out of luck... there is a CD manufactured in Europe (Europe?), secretly hiding out under the name "Best Shot." So now you know. Don't ask why the Euros might care more about a basketball soundtrack than any American music company... just take this assist and dunk it, baby!

More: Love & Basketball is a great movie, filled with songs memorable and fitting, but no mentionable score or inspiring instrumental music. Of course, for the Looney Toon in you, a couple of soundtracks exist for Space Jam with MJ (not Jackson, if that's what yer thinking, although sex-tape man R Kelly's song deserved an Oscar that year, more than any other).

Basketball movie soundtracks now living in faded oblivion: Coach Carter (already toast), Hoop Dreams, The 6th Man (total air ball!), and Basketball Diaries.

See you in the bleachers...

Expanded Cutthroat Island soundtrack due April 2005

Before John Debney wrote The Passion of the Christ and the soon-to-be-released Sin City soundtrack music (btw, How are these two films for the resume? If you can write hallowed music for Jesus the man God and a low brooding score for a city completely devoid of morals, you can do just about anything I suppose), he busted his chops on a great big huge orchestral score for Cutthroat Island. Just about everything failed in this film except for Debney's music, which really is a resurrection (hey, Debney's good at this) of E.W. Korngold's classic swashbuckling scores from the 1930s. Even the first original soundtrack CD released failed to find a distributor before the label went bellyup, so the only version that's been available is an import from the UK. But coming in April 2005 is a new 2 CD set with all kinds of music left off the first releases, included Debney's synth mock up demo that apparently landed him the gig.

Ahem, the tracklisting:

Disc 1
1. Main Title/Morgan's Ride
2. The Rescue/Morgan Saves Harry
3. Purcell Snatcher
4. Shaw is Caught
5. The Funeral
6. From the inside track, top selling CDs this year include those with music from Phantom of the Opera and Ray (there are multiple soundtrack versions from each movie, you know... the "more music from" and "bonus this and that" CDs that all aim to make us obsessive over something motion picture-like that has music in the foreground!).

Keeping strong is the Garden State soundtrack, why? 1,000,000 reasons, including yours. Interest in the Finding Neverland and Motorcycle Diaries soundtracks skyrocketed for a week or two in March thanks to the Oscars bestowed upon their musical merits in February.

So what's next? In the world of instrumental scores, if John Williams is due on the scene, then that's what's next. The name of the most Oscar-nominated man in history will be on screen twice in less than as many months to kick off the summer season: Star Wars Episode III The Revenge of the Sith and War of the Worlds. Both promise bigness.

Back later....
